  • Project Description:

Voices in Action is a survivor-founded and led 501(c)3 nonprofit changing the intersectional culture of sexual assault through innovative technology and modern research based in trauma and pyschological research. They offer an equitable, independent platform for documenting and timestamping incidents of sexual misconduct and violence while tracking serial perpetrators and providing trauma-informed support. They also have an extremely limited bandwidth and resources. Voices in action needs to determine how to efficiently leverage its strengths to meet the organization's culture-shaping goals to empower survivors of sexual violence.

How can Voices in Action ensure that they are putting survivors first and position themselves as change makers in the fight against sexual violence? This report focuses on brand rejuvenation & redevelopment for the VIA non-profit organization. Through a variety of User Experience Design methodologies this report will make recommendations to broaden the platform outreach to organizations and individuals. The project itself is structured around 6 specific phases. They include:

    1. Background Research
    2. Modeling
    3. Iteration 1 - Ideation & Design
    4. Iteration 2 - Design & Test
    5. Iteration 3 - Design & Test
    6. Assessment & Recommendations

Each of these 6 steps includes a variety of UX research including surveys, heuristic evaluations, usability tests, interviews and more. The details of this research is included further in this report. After several iterations and testing of those concepts and designs, it is concluded that development on 4 core areas will help VIA put survivors first and position itself as a change-maker in the fight against sexual violence. They include:

    1. Language & Messaging
    2. Brand Development
    3. Content
    4. Outreach Efficiency

A prototype that addressed these 4 core areas was designed and the main adjustments/additions include:

    1. Homepage Redesign
    2. Modified Support & Resources
    3. Offender Tracking Registry (formerly known as Report an Incident)
    4. Added Stories of Hope section

Highlights include use of the term, “Offender Tracking Registry” in place of the existing “Report an Incident” section which lessens association with law enforcement but still leaves people unclear about this service. All remarks on the color scheme and layout adjustments were positive and it is recommended that all pages follow a similar structure. One of the most important findings is how the website itself is missing a human element that people desire when discussing highly sensitive and emotional topics. General findings and recommendations like these are presented throughout this report.
